Biography

Ms. Sousa has always been creative. She began sewing with her mother at a young age and progressed to the various needle arts such as petit point, embroidery, and cross stitch. Later she became interested in lithography, etching, silk screen and scratchboard and dabble in pottery and photography.

She spent many afternoons with her grandmother’s artist friends and became immersed in the world of oil painting and pastels. She modeled for the artists, listening to them speak about color and light. The spark was lit but it was not until many years later that she was encouraged by her husband to begin formal drawing instruction. She began classes in traditional painting with Marc Massaro at the Branford Art Studio in 2011. The instructor began drawing with a small group of novice students, quickly seeing potential, he moved them on to oil painting. Her first large portrait was of her grandmother as a way of thanking her for the years of art exposure.

The excitement of understanding how make what was in her head come through her fingers was overwhelming. Ms. Sousa began sketching on the train or where ever she was. Being a lover of her animals, she began painting their portraits. The mass of flowers in her gardens are willing participants as well.

Ms. Sousa obtained a Marketing degree from Middlesex Community College and is a graduate of Branford Hall Career Institute. She is employed by Yale University as the Operations Manager in Cardiology.

This is the first exhibition of work for Ms. Sousa. She is a member of the Clinton Art Society.
